SOG Heritage Week

By VP Mike Taylor

The 3d Battalion, 3d Special Forces Group (Airborne) invited SOG veterans to Ft Bragg for “MACVSOG-SOG Heritage Week” 8-10 November 2021. About 20 SOG veterans attended. Our purpose was to share lessons learned (war stories) from our operations during the Vietnam War, many of which have already been adopted during their Global War on Terror operations. Their purpose was to show us what modern SF soldiers are like, their facilities, equipment and training. Both groups benefited from the exchange and enjoyed the camaraderie more than I can express. We were treated like rock stars and came to regard the active duty guys the same way. CSM Rod Scalise, MSG Ross Buttle and SFC Gerry McGowan were the perfect hosts and became fast friends. I left there with all my concerns allayed about what will SF become given what I had seen in the media about the modern video-game playing generation. Every soldier we saw was in terrific physical condition and with the highest morale. We can absolutely be proud of our modern day comrades-in-arms.
