Boots on the
Ground - The History of Project Delta
Early
in the Vietnam conflict the U.S. command structure recognized a need for
solid verifiable intelligence about enemy locations, movements and
tactics. Much of the enemy's covert activity was occurring in Laos and
Cambodia, areas where U.S. presence was not permitted. Project Delta was
the first successful unit that evolved to perform long range
reconnaissance and other counter insurgency missions deep in enemy
territory. Project Delta's operations remained classified until 1996.
For the first time, the history of this storied unit has been recorded
from volumes of declassified military documents and from hundreds of
hours of interviews conducted in 2009. The author is a former member of
the U.S. Army's Special Forces and was a recon team leader in Project
Delta.

The Ether Zone
Plunge
into Vietnam’s steamy jungle with Delta Recon...be prepared to duck!
Project Delta and its clandestine special reconnaissance operations
proved to be one of the most successful Special Operations units of the
Vietnam War, yet few Americans have ever heard of them, or know that
this unit’s operational model was precursor for the renowned Delta
Force. This small unit, comprised of less than 100 U.S. Army Special
Forces men, amassed a record for bravery second to none. Now, for the
first time, the Project Delta “Quiet Professionals” finally share their
story.
Highly trained as experts in special reconnaissance techniques and
procedures, the covert Project Delta missions were accomplished through
recon team insertions into enemy territory. The primary sources of
intelligence collection for Project Delta, these tough and tenacious men
recount hair-raising adventures.
Enter the world of a highly classified project to learn what makes U.S.
Army Special Forces soldiers tick—and learn the legacy of these men of
honor, their breathtaking heroics, humility, humor, camaraderie and
brotherhood.
Praise for The Ether Zone
“...a must-read for those who are aspiring to enter our Special Forces,
or other elite units where guts, innovation, and dedication are
essential ingredients for success…or, for that matter, anyone who would
like a down-and-dirty vicarious experience in our Special Forces.”
Major
General David J. Baratto, U.S. Army Retired, Former Commander, John F.
Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School
“An exciting read...places you in the middle of the action!”
Brigadier
General John F. Flanagan, U.S. Air Force Retired, Author, Vietnam Above
the Treetops, former Delta FAC pilot
“Ray Morris, with skill, has assembled a remarkable true history of the
then-secret actions of those few brave Nung, Montagnard, Vietnamese and
American men who served in B-52 Delta."
Colonel Alan Park, U.S. Army
(Ret), Commander, Project Delta—1969
“First off, I'm a former Marine that was at Mai Loc from 1 Sept 69 to 4
Oct 69, and had the honor to be attached to Detachment B-52, Project
Delta for Operation Trojan Horse I & II. And I have to say
thank you to those SFs that I served with there. After finding out more
about this special group of Soldiers, I am very humbled and proud to say
I had the privilege to serve with them. After wondering what was going
on and who was I with for many years, this book filled in more pieces of
the puzzle for me. R.C. Morris did an excellent job in writing this book
and doing the research to make it factual. Highly recommend it for
reference or just plain reading to understand what was going on. It is
not a dry read.
Just go buy the book, it's a hellava read. Sleep tight, the world’s best
military is protecting our freedom!”
J. Bandarek
“…it brought back a lot of memories just as if they happened yesterday
and answered many questions I’ve had for years about the Project. …you
did a first-class job of catching the essence and character of this very
unique organization and some of the personalities that made up that
organization. On behalf of those in the Project who didn’t make it back
or have died since returning to the States without having had a chance
to see and read the book, thanks for telling their story so that their
families and history will know what heroes they were. …top rate job!”
Len Boulas, former member Project Delta
“Wow! …makes me feel like I’m there and I don’t want to be there! You’ve
captured the human element of these brave warriors.”
Harry E. Jones, Jr.
“Your writing is so detailed, so descriptive, that I feel I’m on the
ground with the team. It’s positively hair-raising and nerve
racking…..if you haven’t already read it, get a copy…that book is hard
to put down. …"
Erick Walker Miller, B-Co, 1st Plt, 1st 327th Inf RVN
1969-1970
“Great job, excellent read. Makes my year at A-104 more like R&R. Those
guys on Delta were the best. Now, thanks to you, more Americans will
realize what brave men they were and still are. Thank you for writing
it!” Michael C. Natale
“Thanks for the book…you really did the Project justice. Too bad the
guys couldn’t give you more info so the book could be three times
thicker!...You did a fantastic job!”
Gary Nichols, former Delta recon
“Friends brought me a copy of your autographed book from Las Vegas…such
a wonderful gift. Joe often spoke of several troops and the events
connected….I remember Joe told me one new person, after experiencing a
Project Delta mission with Joe said they were so wild and dangerous, he
called all of them ‘crazy’ and would not go out with them again.”
Linda
Alderman, widow of Joe Alderman, former Delta recon
“a great read, …I couldn’t put it down. Very well done and a great
tribute to Delta.”
Ron Piper, B-36 Recon 1968
“…The Ether Zone is bringing back countless memories of the people I
served with in Vietnam and Okinawa. I was in the Cantho when Project
Delta was started. Bill Craig went to Nha Trang to join Project Delta in
1964. The B-Team B130, which later moved to Long Xuyen, went on the
first U.S. operation in VN after prisoners in the U Minh forest….I
appreciate your book.”
Donald B. Shoff
“Thank you for your hard work and talented writing. You did us all very
proud, and you should be proud of your accomplishment.”
Jerry Estenson
“My four copies were all devoured by my friends/customers/veterans…great
job!
Paul DuBois, Belgium
“I really liked it! Well written…really amazing stories. I sure do
respect you all, those who were there and did that.”
Jari Salo, Finland
“…Just finished reading it for the third time…a truly monumental and
long deserved body of work.…Thanks for the great book and hard work!”

Hunting The Jackal –
(2004 – HarperCollins Publishing) On the Shelves now.
This long-time SOG and SOA Member, Billy Waugh, discusses SOG Special
Operations actions during the years 1966-68, then 1970-71 as Recon
Company CCS and Recon Company CCN Sergeant Major of these units in daily
combat v. the North Vietnamese on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The latter
Chapters of this book discuss the truthful ‘take down’ of Ilich Rameriz-Sanchez,
aka Carlos the Jackal, who was the World’s # 1 Terrorist
during the
1980’s and early 1990s. Carlos the Jackal, a very exotic name Rameriz-Sanchez
rewarded himself, was deadly; and, totally without remorse, in his use
of explosives and violence during the conduct of his deadly terrorist
actions. Credited with killing dozens of citizens and officials in
France, and other nations about the world, Rameriz-Sanchez was the
subject of a CIA surveillance action during the months of March – Aug
1994 – This book is first-person accounting, by the author. Rameriz-Sanchez
this date (2008) still resides in the French Le Sante prison, resting in
maximum security.

Don Bendell
Don Bendell was an officer with the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th SFGA’s. In
1968-1969, he was XO-CAPO of A-242, Dak Pek and a district coordinator
with the Phoenix Program for Dak Pek and Dak Sut Districts. Two of his
sons currently also wear funny hats and the tab. He is former President
of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of SFA (M-4887) and is a member of SOA
(1920-GA).
Honorary Green Beret wrote of his current trilogy of military specops
thrillers, “I feel so honored that Don patterned Bo Derek as a cross
between me and his wife Shirley. BAMBOO BATTLEGROUND ties up all the
loose ends from the previous two novels in the trilogy and is a military
thriller that I could not put down. The old-fashioned romance between
the main characters is refreshing and the suspense and action kept me
glued to the pages. I think Don really did it with these three books.”
Jim Morris author of WAR STORY and OPERATION DUMBO DROP wrote: “Don
Bendell knows this stuff cold and writes better action scenes than any
man alive.”Don also wrote the SF non-fiction Vietnam books CROSSBOW,
SNAKE-EATER, THE B-52 OVERTURE, and VALLEY OF TEARS . He also wrote 10
western historical fiction novels and the late PLAYBOY Men’s Column
editor Asa Baber wrote, “If you liked Louis L’Amour, you will really
love Don Bendell .” He also created and wrote the first 6 sci-fi novels
called the TRACKER series under the pen name Ron Stillman.
You can order any of Don’s books or his successful motion picture THE
INTRUCTOR by going to his website

whatever you wish to order. There are over 1,500,000 copies of Don’s
books in print worldwide.
Don also used to teach martial arts at the Fort Bragg Boxing Club and
owns and operates karate schools in southern Colorado . He is featured
sometimes in BLACK BELT magazine, such as the May, 2008 issue, and was
inducted into the international Karate Hall of Fame in 1995.
